  • ADFEST 2014

I attended ADFEST (Ad Fest) 2014, Asia’s largest advertising festival.
    http://www.adfest.com/index.php

As in previous years, it was held in Pattaya, Thailand (3/6–3/8). The theme was “Co-create the Future.” The official language of the venue was English, but simultaneous interpretation into Japanese was also available. While the festival is centered mainly on Asian advertising, companies from the U.S., Australia, and Europe also participated. (41 cities, 295 companies, 17 categories total, roughly 3,253 entries.) From Japan, major full-service agencies like Dentsu, Hakuhodo, and ADK sent large delegations. Japan had a strong showing this year.

Even though we lump it all together as “Asia,” it really can’t be summed up in one phrase — language, lifestyle, economic strength, religion, and more vary so much from country to country that the advertising on display was equally diverse. I was genuinely inspired by cases of brilliant promotions that, even without big budgets, tapped precisely into consumer needs and everyday habits. It also made me feel that if I thought harder about my own day-to-day work, I could produce something even better. It really reaffirmed how important constant, daily effort is.

As for Japanese advertising, since our environment is closest to it, it was naturally the most relatable reference point for me. But seeing it against the backdrop of the rest of Asia really highlighted the meticulousness and polish that Japan is known for. When it came to explaining campaign ad performance, a lot of presentations leaned on numbers from internet media. It really drove home how powerful online media is when it comes to making a persuasive, data-backed case for advertising effectiveness.

  • Launch of Facebook Ad CPI/CPA Services

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new advertising service.

Facebook ads are typically billed on a CPM/CPC (impression- or click-based) model. With this new service, however, our company assumes the risk, allowing clients to advertise on a CPI (cost-per-install) or CPA (cost-per-acquisition) basis instead.

    Key benefits include:

    1. Reduced risk: CPI/CPA billing allows for cost control based on actual results.
    2. No corporate credit card required: Payment can be made via invoice and bank transfer through our company.
    3. Reduced administrative burden: Clients are relieved of the burden of ad placement procedures and operations.

For further details, please refer to the service PDF or feel free to contact us via our inquiry form.

  • Report: Smartphone “Real Affiliate” Program Conducted at Internet Cafes (Manga Cafes)

Since May, we have been running a real-world affiliate advertising program for smartphones, conducted through internet cafes.

The advertiser was an online video streaming service (offering unlimited access to 10,000 Hollywood films and popular overseas dramas), with member registration serving as the conversion metric.

When users visit an internet cafe, staff at the front desk introduce the advertiser’s service and encourage sign-up during check-in. Flyers are also placed in the booths used by customers, allowing users who did not register at the front desk to sign up on their own.

Users who register for the advertiser’s service on the spot receive benefits such as free internet cafe usage (1–3 hours) or a complimentary light snack (e.g., french fries), giving them a clear incentive to sign up while at the cafe. For the internet cafes themselves, the program offers the added benefits of increased revenue through affiliate commissions and higher repeat visit rates.

While affiliate marketing has traditionally centered on web and app channels—with mobile phone retail stores being the main venue for real-world affiliate programs—this initiative successfully opened up a new customer acquisition channel through internet cafes. In addition, rather than offering digital incentives such as online points, this program provided real, immediately usable incentives (e.g., free usage vouchers, complimentary snacks).

    □ Program Overview

    • Advertiser: Online video streaming service (unlimited access to 10,000 Hollywood films and popular overseas dramas; supports PC and smartphone multi-device access)
    • Conversion metric: Member registration (requires name, email address, date of birth, gender, and credit card information)
    • Target devices: Smartphones (iOS, Android)
    • Participating locations: 15 locations across 5 internet cafe operators (as of the May launch)
    • User incentives: Primarily free internet cafe usage and complimentary light snacks (e.g., french fries)
